Canadian Streetwear: Bryan Espiritu

Bryan Espiritu is a Toronto based artist. His main streetwear line is the Legends League and he also has themed drops like the recent Espiritu Sucks pop up in May.

Espiritu regularly posts updates on his personal IG (@bryanespiritu) talking about his process, his journey, his struggles and his achievements. I find it inspiring to read such a bravely honest accounting of the highs and lows of a creative life. Beyond that though, the art is dope and the clothes are too.

Recently, Espiritu is seeing growing success, with art pieces in the recently opened Jordan store at 306 Yonge st.

Why do I like him:

Below are two pieces from the Espiritu Sucks (@espiritusucks) pop up a few weeks ago. Both take familiar logos and rework them, a common theme in streetwear but really well executed here.

Custom art was also available at the pop-up.

Espiritu’s main thing is the Legends League . This line has more original art from Espiritu including the super popular Blue Jay snapback (not pictured because my head is too small to wear adult sized snapbacks).

The bottom line

I like what Legends League and Bryan Espiritu bring to Toronto and to streetwear. I don’t want to use words like authentic and honest (ugh) but this is a streetwear brand with something to say. Too many streetwear designers just slap a photo or logo that looks cool on a t-shirt from their ‘creative director’ and call it a day. Espiritu is reaching for something more and its something I want to support.
